Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Re-reading a story can help to summarise the plot and remember the main events
  2. A theme is a main idea in a story that often tries to teach the reader about something
  3. Relating the theme to ourselves can link the book to our own experiences
  4. Linking a story to our own experiences is thinking from our own perspective
  5. Responsibility means taking care of something, someone or completing some tasks

Keywords

  • Theme - a theme is a big idea, topic or message that recurs within a text

  • Perspective - point of view

  • Plot - what happens in a story

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to write their own sentence about what they are responsible for.

If necessary, pupils could just draw a picture and have the sentence scribed for them as the primary focus for this session is engaging with the text and understanding what responsibility means.

When discussing responsibilities, spend time talking about responsibilities in your pupils' context, such as class helpers, staff member's responsibilities, older children's roles, responsibilities you know their family members may have etc.
