Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Instructions use numbers and ordering fronted adverbials to add order and sequence.
  2. Instructions can contain adjectives to describe the nouns.
  3. Instructions contain imperative verbs.

Keywords

  • Ordering fronted adverbials - a fronted adverbial used to order or sequence

  • Instructions - a set of steps or guidelines for someone to follow to complete a specific task or make something

  • Imperative verbs - a type of verb that tells someone what to do

Common misconception

Pupils may order the instructions incorrectly.

Children would benefit from having had some experience of following instructions to make a pizza in advance. Model how to follow a plan carefully to ensure the order of instructions is correct.

Some of the ingredients pupils may want to use may include apostrophes for possession. For example: a dragon's toenail. Use the apostrophes grammar unit to explicitly teach this concept.
