Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. An opening will introduce the setting and main characters.
  2. A descriptive opening will contain expanded noun phrases.
  3. A descriptive opening will contain adverbs and verbs.
  4. We can use notes from our plan to form full sentences.

Keywords

  • Verb - a doing or being word

  • Adverb - a word that describs a verb

  • Expanded noun phrase - a group of words with no verb that adds detail to a noun

Common misconception

Pupils may just copy out the words from their plans.

Explicitly model reading your plan and turning those notes into full sentences. This will also be modelled in Learning Cycle 1 where the children orally rehearse their sentences.

Print out the images of the opening so your pupils write their sentences next to that particular image. This will help them to structure their narrative opening correctly.
