Lesson details
Key learning points
- The letters i and u are x-height letters
- The letters l and t have an ascender
- The letters y and j have a desecender
- The letters i, l, t and u finish with a flick on the baseline
- The letters y and j finish with a curl up on the descender line
Keywords
X-height letter - letters that sit between the baseline and the x-height line
Ascender - the part of a letter that extends above the x-height line
Descender - the part of a letter that descends below the baseline
Common misconception
There may be confusion on the direction for the 'curl up' on the y and j.
Be consistent with wording and modelling. Left direction is 'curl up' whereas 'flick' is when the direction is to the right.
Use consistent actions to support children's understanding and recall of key words. For example reaching up for ascenders and reaching down for descenders.
