Keywords
Recount - A recount is a piece of writing that recalls an event or experience.
Chronological order - arranging events in time order
First person - the 'I/we' perspective
Past tense - tells the reader the action happened before now
Opinion - a personal view about something
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to speak correctly in the past tense, particularly with irregular verbs (e.g. saying 'sawed' or 'seed' for saw).
Use this lesson as an opportunity for as much oral rehearsal as possible to support children's errors in the moment. Repeat and re-model sentences back to them. Model incorrectly and ask the children to spot your mistakes.
Depending on when you are doing this unit, you might need to adapt your writing expectations as well as the content of the lesson. This includes the specific content of your school trip as well as the expectation of outcome (e.g. reduce the content if using this unit for an autumn term recount).
