Key learning points

  1. Successful speaking includes speaking loudly and clearly enough for everyone to hear.
  2. Speaking in full sentences helps the listener understand what is being said.
  3. When retelling a story with someone, it is important to take turns and listen to what the other person is saying.
  4. Storytelling language can help a listener to understand and enjoy a story.

Keywords

  • Retelling - summarising a story in your own words, highlighting key events and details

  • Volume - how loud or quiet someone speaks

  • Speaking - using your voice to talk to someone

  • Listening - paying attention to what someone is saying

Common misconception

Pupils may just retell the nursery rhyme exactly as it is in four sentences.

Explain that we are retelling 'Humpty Dumpty' as a story and need to add our own storytelling language and detail.

Pupils could rehearse then present their versions of the story in small groups or in front of the whole class if they are feeling confident.
