Lesson details
Key learning points
- tion' is the most common spelling of /shun/.
- How to spell the common exception word: Monday.
- Monday is a proper noun and is spelt using a capital letter.
- A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word.
Keywords
Suffix - a group of letters added to the end of a root word
Noun - a naming word for people, places or things
Proper noun - a naming word that needs capitalisation
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to spell the root word.
As we are adding new learning, it's key to refer back to prior learning (in prior Y2 units as well as Rec and Y1). Refer back to learning in line with your school's SSP to support cognitive load, so pupils can focus on the suffix.
Use pupils' misconceptions from the practice tasks to review together, without judgement, and to identify rules that can help with areas of difficulty e.g. Are all sounds being represented in a word? Are connections being made to the root word?
