Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word.
  2. If the suffix starts with a consonant letter, it is usually added without any change to the root word.
  3. If a root word has more than one syllable and ends in a consonant + 'y', then 'y' is replaced by 'i' before the suffix.
  4. How to spell the common exception word: beautiful.

Keywords

  • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning

  • Adjective - describes a noun

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

Common misconception

Children can think the suffix is spelt like the word 'full' with a double 'l'.

Explicitly discuss the difference in spelling, and provide opportunities to look at words and identify those with the suffix in them.

Ensure children know the meanings of focus words in the lesson. You can adapt the 'ful' words to use words that may better match current units of work.
