I can spell words using the suffix -ly.
Lesson details
Key learning points
- A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word.
- If the suffix starts with a consonant letter, it is usually added without any change to the root word.
- If a root word has more than one syllable and ends in a consonant + 'y', then 'y' is replaced by 'i' before the suffix.
- How to spell the common exception word: whole.
Common misconception
Pupils may think all words ending in -ly are adverbs.
Explain there are also adjectives that end in -ly, like friendly, lonely, or lovely.
Keywords
Suffix - a group of letters added to the end of a root word
Adverb - describes a verb
Adjective - describes a noun
Syllable - a single sound or beat in a word that contains a vowel sound
Pupils won't necessarily see the connections between words and how this links to spelling. Point out if we can spell loud, then we also know how to spell loudly (as they have the same root word).
