- The words start with a lead in on the line and finish with a lead out.
- Letters in the common exception words will be joined using a range of joins depending on the letters in the word.
- There is appropriate spacing between the letters.
- You don't lift your pencil to form the joins.
Keywords
Common exception word - a word that does not follow the regular phonics or spelling rules
Join - how the letters are connected together
Letter string - a group of letters that are written together in a word
Letter spacing - the amount of space between individual letters in a word, ensuring they are evenly spread out for clear and legible writing
Common misconception
As the words get longer, children can rush, causing the letter spacing to become uneven and the writing illegible.
Remind and model to the children that the flow and movement of the pencil is the same at the end of the word as it is at the beginning.
