Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Writing at speed is a valuable skill to develop.
  2. Writing at speed can decrease the legibility and accuracy of your writing.

  4. When you are confident to write, you can increase the speed that you take notes.
  5. Note-taking can improve your learning experience.

Keywords

  • Speed - in handwriting, refers to the rate at which one can write

  • Note-taking - writing down key points, ideas and important information

  • Accurate - being exact and precise

  • Balance - everything is equal and steady

  • Legible - clear and easy to read and understand

Common misconception

When taking notes, the children may feel pressure to write at speed, creating mistakes with their letter formation and therefore the legibility of the notes.

Get the children to keep reading their notes back. Remind them that if they can't read the notes then they need to slow down and find a balance between speed, accuracy and legibility.

There will be lots of opportunities in other lessons to take notes. Try to take some time to get the children to read their notes back, checking for legibility. The children can also compare the different ways their peers have chosen to organise their notes.
