Key learning points
- Print handwriting is recommended for tasks where clarity, legibility and uniformity are essential.
- Application forms and medical forms will require you to fill information out in print or block capitals.
- E-mail addresses and postal addresses require the use of print letters or capital letters to ensure legibility.
- Block capitals refer to the writing style where each letter is written as a capital letter and formed separately.
- Letter formation and letter spacing should be accurate when writing in print to ensure legibility.
Keywords
Print - the writing style where letters are formed individually and don't join to other letters
Capital letter - the uppercase formation of a letter
Legible - clear and easy to read and understand
Block capitals - the writing style where each letter is written as an uppercase letter
Common misconception
Sometimes children can revert back to cursive when comparing print and block capitals.
Remind the children that when writing in print, you lift your pencil after forming each letter. Emphasise this in your modelling to remind the children.
There will be examples of print being used around the classroom, for example, door signs or tray labels. It would be a good opportunity to let the children explore the classroom and look for these examples as a movement break.
