Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. 'Conceited' is an adjective which means vain or proud.
  2. 'Presumptuous' is an adjective which means overconfident, arrogant or rude.
  3. 'Unflappable' is an adjective which means cool, calm or collected.

Keywords

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Adjective - a word that describes a noun

  • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

  • Word pair - words that often appear together

  • Prefix - a letter or group of letters added to the start of a word to change its meaning

Common misconception

Pupils might think that the two prefixes 'pre' and 'un' have the same effect on a root word.

Spend time teaching that each prefix has a different purpose and changes the root word in a different way.

Some of the word pairs in this lesson are insults e.g. 'snob', 'oaf' and 'fool'. Ensure pupils understand that these are unkind words. Discuss that the words they are associated with 'presumptuous' and 'conceited' are therefore negative words.
