Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Reading can take many forms; all are equally as valid as each other.
  2. Narrative fiction can cover a range of genres, content, settings and styles.
  3. A graphic novel is a type of text combining words and images in long-form, sequential art panels.

Keywords

  • Form - form is the way that a text can be presented.

  • Illustrated chapter book - An illustrated chapter book is a longer fictional text with illustrations to support understanding.

  • Graphic novel - A graphic novel is a type of text combining words and images in long-form, sequential art panels.

Common misconception

Graphic novels and comics share many similar features. Pupils might use the term interchangeably.

Graphic novels have a clear beginning, middle and end, unlike comics which are usually released weekly in shorter comic strips.

Have physical copies of illustrated chapter books and graphic novels in class so pupils can make links from the lesson to texts available in school.
