Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. 'Deflated' is an adjective which means feeling hopeless or let down.
  2. 'Envious' is an adjective which means jealous or resentful.
  3. 'Disheartened', 'regretful', 'humiliated' and 'snubbed' are other rich vocabulary associated with feeling bad.

Keywords

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Adjective - a word that describes a noun

  • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

  • Word pair - words that often appear together

Common misconception

Pupils will need further explanation on some of the more abstract word pairs. For example, a 'regretful tone' or a 'disheartened silence'.

For each word pair that is more abstract, ask the pupils why something might be described in that way and put the word pair in a sentence to model to the pupils how to use it correctly.

The image and sentence for 'humiliated' is about pulling someone's trousers down. Ensure pupils understand that this is just used to exemplify the word and its meaning and this would be an unkind thing to do to anyone in real life.
