Motion - the name for the belief or proposal that is being debated
Debate - a structured argument between two teams
Common misconception
Pupils may find it difficult to explain why a motion is not effective.
Explain thoroughly the criteria of an 'effective motion': it should be clear and easy to understand; both sides must have an opportunity to make a fair point; it must be relatable, important and respectful.
Use the gesture of pulling your two hands apart (in a stretching motion) to remind pupils to answer questions in a full sentence using the word 'because' to give a reason for their opinion. This will prompt them non-verbally during talk tasks.
