- Two or more words that are spelt the same but have different meanings are called homonyms.
- Some homonyms are spelt the same, but have contrasting sounds and different meanings (e.g. tear, wind, wound or read).

Keywords
Homoynm - words that have the same spelling or pronunciation as other words but a different meaning.
Homophone - words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings
Word class - different types of words that are used to form sentences
Context - the surrounding words or sentences that help determine the meaning of a word or phrase
Common misconception
Pupils may pronounce homonyms incorrectly in sentences.
Show pupils that we can use the context of the sentence to help us uncover the meaning of the homonym and therefore its pronunciation.
