Key learning points

  1. Two or more words that are spelt the same but have different meanings are called homonyms.
  2. Some homonyms are spelt the same, but have contrasting sounds and different meanings (e.g. tear, wind, wound or read).
  3. The meaning and word class of homonyms can be determined by their context.
  4. How to spell the curriculum words: community and leisure.

  • Homophone - words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings

Common misconception

Pupils may pronounce homonyms incorrectly in sentences.

Show pupils that we can use the context of the sentence to help us uncover the meaning of the homonym and therefore its pronunciation.

Various contexts and use of images can support with solidifying children's understanding of both homonyms and homophones.
