Keywords

  • Silent letters - a letter in a word that is not pronounced when the word is spoken

Common misconception

Pupils may assume that all curriculum words are common exception words.

Discuss that the list is made up of words with the rules they have learnt or should have come across. Discuss the rules some words use compared to words that may be exceptions.

Give pupils plenty of opportunities for self-reflection. Encourage them to take responsibility by looking back through their work and identifying any spellings that they regularly find challenging. Give them time to talk with others about what it is about these spellings that they find challenging.
