Using images to make comparisons and predictions in 'Mirror'

I can compare and contrast images in 'Mirror'.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The Moroccan story is set in the Valley of the Roses; the Western (Australian) setting is based on a suburb of Sydney.
  2. The two landscapes contrast with each other.
  3. Asking questions about the images helps us to understand their purpose.
  4. A prediction can be based on reading and discussion. It can also link to a reader's own personal experience.
  5. Drawing comparisons between images helps us to understand their meaning.

Common misconception

Pupils may not have familiarity with either setting.

Use Google Earth to explore the satellite view of the Valley of the Roses in Morocco and Rozelle, Sydney (which the city suburb is based on).

Keywords

  • Prediction - an educated guess, based on evidence in the text or prior knowledge

  • Landscape - the visible features of an area of land, including its physical elements (such as mountains, valleys, rivers and plants), as well as human-made elements (such as buildings, roads and structures)

  • Compare - identifying similarities between two or more things, ideas, concepts, or texts

  • Contrast - identifying differences between two or more things, ideas, concepts, or texts

If any pupils' or their families reflect either of the stories' settings (e.g. Moroccan / Australian), it would be useful to involve them in discussions, deepening the class' understanding of both cultures.
