Key learning points

  1. Persuasion is the action or process of trying to change someone’s mind or behaviour.
  2. Persuading someone to agree with you all starts with a persuasive point.
  3. A persuasive point is an idea or reason to support your opinion.
  4. Points will usually contain the word ‘because’ which is used to give a reason for an opinion.

Keywords

  • Generate - to produce or create something

  • Points - an idea or reason to support your opinion

Common misconception

Pupils may think that points should involve full and long explanations.

Teach pupils that points are only one sentence long and use the word 'because' to give one reason to justify an opinion.

You may wish to use the 'Introduction to Debate' unit for inspiration and ideas if your class have not studied this unit already. This will support pupils in understanding how to form opinions and points.
