Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A formal letter should be written using a formal tone.
  2. A formal letter has specific layout features.
  3. An introduction contains three sentences: one introductory, one setting-up the argument & one sharing the purpose.

Keywords

  • Layout - refers to the way the information is organised on the page

  • Formal - refers to a style of writing which is serious, impersonal and factual in tone

  • Introduction - the opening paragraph of a non-fiction text that encourages the reader to read on

Common misconception

Pupils may think that they can place the sender's and recipient's address wherever they like.

Teach pupils that there are strict rules to follow in terms of the layout of a formal letter. Provide pupils with a range of examples of formal letters for them to explore in groups.

You may wish to play a game where pupils write imaginary letters to a fictional character to practise using the correct layout structure.
