- When the root word ends in 'e', remove the 'e' and add the suffix -ery.
- How to spell the curriculum words: regular, calendar and continue.
Keywords
Noun - a naming word for a person, place or thing
Adjective - describes a noun
Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes
Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning
Common misconception
Children may think words such as 'feathery' have the -ery suffix.
Reinforce that most words ending in -ery have a root word. Encourage children to spot the root word before the -ery.
Where possible, choose words that follow the rules so as not to confuse pupils too much. Ensure they have a good understanding of the word's meaning first. If they don't understand it, they will not be able to spell it.
