Lesson details
Key learning points
- The suffix -ic often turns nouns into adjectives.
- When the root word ends in 'e', remove the 'e' and add the suffix -ic.
- When the root word ends in 'y', remove the 'y' and add the suffix -ic.
- When the root word does not end in 'e' or 'y', just add the suffix -ic.
- How to spell the curriculum words: sentence, experiment and question.
Keywords
Noun - a naming word for a person, place or thing
Adjective - describes a noun
Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes
Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning
Common misconception
Pupils will be used to the 'ck' representing the 'c' phoneme when at the end of the word.
Explain that in most words where the 'c' is at the end, it is represented as 'ck'. As this is a suffix, it doesn't follow usual rules.
