Lesson details
Key learning points
- Words that are pronounced the same but have different spellings and meanings are called homophones.
- Unlike other words we have investigated, there are no patterns for homophones.
- The way a word is spelt and its place within a sentence will tell us its meaning.
- How to spell the curriculum words: ordinary, grammar and women.
Keywords
Homophone - words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings
Common misconception
Children may not know the spelling due to not always being able to rely on rules.
Remind children of the range of spelling strategies they could use to remember the spellings, such as naughty letters or big letters.
Encourage children to add images to their 'naughty letters' strategies to emphasise the spellings as well as the meanings. Display some of these images in the classroom for later learning.
