Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Effective presentations are planned in advance.
  2. Part of planning a presentation is organising what you are going to say and in what order.
  3. Vocabulary chosen must be suitable for the presentation's audience and its purpose.
  4. Engaging with an audience involves grabbing their attention and maintaining it.
  5. Presentation skills can be learnt, developed and practised.

Keywords

  • Audience - a group of people watching and listening to a presentation or performance

  • Purpose - the aim, point or reason behind giving a presentation

  • Presentation skills - skills used when talking to an audience, like making eye contact, using expression, using gestures and having confident body language

Common misconception

Pupils may think that they are either a 'good communicator' or a 'bad communicator'.

Ensure that pupils have a growth mindset when it comes to developing presentation and communication skills. All the presentation skills showcased in this lesson can be practised, including those that pupils feel confident in!

When modelling a presentation skill like expression in the voice, ensure you over-emphasise how **not** to do it. If you are modelling speaking quietly, speak very quietly; if you are modelling speaking monosyllabically, speak in a true monotone; if you are modelling pace, speak far too quickly.
