Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Times of transition in life can provoke different emotions such as excitement, sadness or nervousness.
  2. Talking about feelings can help a person to feel more comfortable and less anxious.
  3. An essential part of having a discussion is the ability to actively listen.
  4. Active listening helps a person understand different perspectives and empathise with other people's experiences.
  5. Moving from primary school to secondary school can be both exciting and daunting.

Keywords

  • Transition - the process of changing from one condition to another

  • Discussion - talking about something in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas

  • Active listening - paying full attention to what someone else is saying, so you can understand them and respond thoughtfully

Common misconception

Pupils may think it is always necessary to give advice when someone shares their feelings.

Encourage pupils to consider that they may not be well-placed to advise in some situations; it can be absolutely fine to just show that you understand the person's feelings and that you will support them.

Ensure that you have already established clear routines for partner talk in your classroom; for instance, you may have a system of labelling partners A and B and having a particular partner speak first.
