Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. In Chapter 2 of ‘The Iron Man’, a character named Hogarth is introduced and he encounters the Iron Man.
  2. The Iron Man is responsible for eating the farmers’ machinery which threatens their livelihood and sense of safety.
  3. Humanity’s response to the Iron Man is one of anger and the farmers develop a plan to trap and bury him.
  4. We can infer deeper emotions of fear and confusion beneath humanity’s angry response.
  5. Hogarth’s emotions shift to sorrow & guilt after the Iron Man is buried as he feels a sense of empathy & responsibility.

Common misconception

Children may find it difficult to understand the emotions that often exist beneath anger. They may also find it difficult to distinguish between 'feeling' anger and 'responding with' anger.

Ask the children to consider a time they have felt angry and what emotions may have triggered the anger. E.g. loneliness or sadness. Explain that anger is a normal emotion to feel but understanding the cause of it can help us respond differently.
