Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Information can be gathered from a range of different sources (both primary and secondary).
  2. Journalists research the topic of their reports in order to write accurately about the topic.
  3. When conducting initial research, facts can be kept general.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that the Titanic departed on its maiden voyage from Belfast.

Explicit references should be made throughout the lesson to the maiden voyage beginning at Southampton.

Keywords

  • Research - the detailed study of a subject

  • Primary source - a source that gives original information from the time of the event

  • Secondary source - a source written or created after the event that gives information about it

Show pupils videos of the Titanic setting sail from Southampton dock to help them understand its size and the public's excitement about the ship at the time of this historic event. Showing a range of primary source photographs will help.
