Key learning points
- Adding the suffix -ing turns the verb into the progressive tense.
- When the vowel sound is short with only one consonant after it, double the consonant and add the suffix -ing.
- When the vowel sound is short with more than one consonant after the vowel sound, just add the suffix -ing.
- How to spell the curriculum words: though, although and through.
Keywords
Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a root word
Short vowel sound - a vowel sound that sounds short when spoken, like 'a' in 'cat' or the 'o' sound in 'hot'
Consonant - a sound that is made by blocking air in the mouth with the teeth, tongue, lips or palate
Common misconception
Pupils often miss the double letters in the middle of words that have a suffix.
Drawing attention to the patterns of how words are spelt when suffixes are added will help them to remember the double letter.
Use images to support the visualisation of words and to help remember the dictated sentence.
