Practise changing nouns from singular to plural using alternative rules

I can use a range of strategies to practise turning words from singular to plural.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. -es is a suffix that can turn a singular noun into a plural.
  2. Using the strategy 'pyramid letters' is a useful practice strategy.
  3. How to spell the curriculum word: describe.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that the -es suffix is always pronounced as 'is'.

Model saying words like 'dominoes' (domino-is) and 'wishes' (wishs) incorrectly. Talk about making meaning when we read and spell.

Keywords

  • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning

  • Plural - more than one

  • Singular - only one

  • Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes

  • Noun - a naming word for a person, place or thing

We can simplify the rules into four groups. Chant and 'my turn, your turn' these rules. Provide more examples from each and get the children to retrieve the rule.
