Key learning points

  1. The boys agree to hold meetings and make plans, using the conch as a debating tool.
  2. The boys realise that nobody knows where they are.
  3. The "littluns" are scared of something they call the "beastie".
  4. The boys start a fire that is meant to attract the attention of ships but causes damage.
  5. Piggy has the greatest knowledge and is the most sensible but the others ignore him and instead act impulsively.

Common misconception

Pupils often judge Piggy by the critical standards employed by the other boys.

Pick out examples of how sensible and intelligent Piggy is and how his judgement is usually sound.
