Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Effective discussions will take turns, develop ideas, use evidence and respond to the other speaker.
  2. You can agree, build upon or challenge ideas to develop better communication between you and peers.
  3. Many different things can help to define a city such as architecture, social factors and heritage.
  4. Cities often help to shape our identity.

Keywords

  • Heritage - the history, traditions and practices of a particular country or society

  • Unique - being the only existing one of its type

  • Architecture - the designed structure of a building

  • Preserve - maintain in its existing state

Common misconception

Students may not realise the importance of listening in discussions, as they may be thinking about what they have to say next.

Explain the importance of listening. Model a discussion with a pupil where you are not listening, ask them how it made them feel and ask the class how it affected the quality of the discussion.

Students are reading quite a complex article in this lesson. Help students to dissect the main ideas of the article by clarifying any phrases they do not understand.
Teacher tip
