Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. There are 1 p coins, 2 p coins, 5 p coins, 10 p coins, 50 p coins, £1 coins and £2 coins and £5, £10 and £20 notes.
  2. A combination of different coins and notes can be used to make the same total value.

Keywords

  • Coin - A coin is a small flat piece of metal used as money.

  • Note - A note or banknote is a piece of paper money.

  • Value - The value of something is how much it is worth in money or other things for which it can be exchanged.

Common misconception

Some children may think that larger coins have a larger value.

Look at examples where this is not the case e.g. a 5p coin is smaller than a 2p coin but has a higher value.

To help you plan your year 2 financial education lesson on: What money have I got?, download all teaching resources for free and adapt to suit your pupils' needs...

Make the lesson as practical as possible. Children have few opportunities to handle coins so give time chance to manipulate and compare them. This is particualry valuable for looking at the relative value of coins. You may want to take time looking at different currencies relating to your pupils.
