Key learning points

  1. The sound-symbol correspondence [-ez] and 'et', meaning and, sound the same as [é] and [-er].
  2. Verbs in the present tense change ending to match the pronoun: je-e, tu-es.
  3. Endings -e and -es sound the same because of the silent final consonant.

Keywords

  • [-ez] and 'et' - pronounced the same as [é] and [-er]

  • Pronoun - a word that takes the place of a noun, like 'it', 'you', 'she'

  • Je - French pronoun 'I'

  • Tu - French pronoun 'you'

Common misconception

The verb ending for 'tu' is -e not -es.

The 's' in the -es ending is not pronounced. A useful way to embed the 'tu' - es form-meaning connection is in reading activities that omit the pronouns 'je' and 'tu'; pupils are compelled to focus on the verb ending to complete the task.

As it takes pupils a long time to acquire accuracy in verb endings, it's really worth insisting about the agreements straight from the start and saying: 'C'est important !'
