Key learning points
- The sound-symbol correspondences [o/au/eau] all have the same sound as in 'gauche', left.
- The SSC [eau] is also a word which means water in French.
- Preparing to understand a new text means learning key new words and also revising vocabulary.
- 'Moi' and 'toi' mean 'me' and 'you'. We use them when we want to emphasise who.
- Reading aloud really helps us to practise good pronunciation.
Keywords
[o/au/eau] - Pronounced 'o' as in 'moto', motorbike.
Moi - Meaning me, usually after a preposition, e.g. pour moi - for me.
Toi - Meaning you, e.g. pour toi - for you.
Common misconception
The SSCs [o], [au] and [eau] are spelt differently so they must be different sounds.
There are three different ways to spell the same [o] sound. You have to be careful and learn the spelling of words in French, as well as being able to read them aloud correctly.
