Key learning points

  1. The sound symbol correspondence [i] sounds like the 'i' in 'midi.
  2. There are two ways of saying 'you' in French: for one person you use 'tu' for more than one person you use 'vous'.
  3. To say you (singular) + regular -er verbs, the verb ends in -es. For you (plural) the verb ends in -ez.
  4. We call these two forms of the verb the 2nd persons singular and plural.

Keywords

  • [i] - sounds like the [i] in midi

  • Tu - subject pronoun for you (singular) in French

  • Vous - subject pronoun for you (plural) in French

Common misconception

There is just one way of saying 'you' in French like in English.

There are two ways of saying 'you' in French. We use 'tu' for 'you singular' and 'vous' for 'you plural'.

It is helpful to have a clear mime to show the difference between 'you singular' (tu) and 'you plural' (vous) in French. Maybe pointing directly at someone for 'tu' and a breaststroke action, pointing to a range of people, for 'vous'.
