Key learning points

  1. [um/un] sounds like 'un'.
  2. -er verbs take the following endings in the present tense: je-e, tu-es, il/elle/on-e, nous-ons, vous-ez, ils/elles-ent.
  3. 'à' + definite article combine to make au/à la/à l’/aux, depending on the gender, number and spelling of the noun.
  4. Some verbs need a preposition in English, but not in French' e.g. 'chercher,' ('to look for'). Others need prepositions.
  5. Verbs can be identified from their position and ending; look for the infinitive form in the dictionary.

Keywords

  • [um/un] - pronounced as in 'un'

  • Verb - word that communicates actions or states

Common misconception

It is fine to use the infinitive next to the subject pronoun.

The infinitive is the dictionary form of the verb but verbs change ending to match their subject (I, you, she, he etc.). Regular -er verbs always add the same set of endings.

If you have longer to spend on dictionary skills for the last cycle of the lesson, it would be worthwhile. If you use online dictionaries with your class, it is still good practice to find the infinitive and then change it for the necessary subject and tense.
