Key learning points

  1. [eu] sounds like 'deux'.
  2. When an adjective is feminine, its spelling and sound can change. Usually an 'e' is added.
  3. An 'e' is not added to form a feminine adjective if the masculine adjective already ends in '-e', e.g., 'triste'.
  4. To change a statement into a question, you can raise your voice at the end.
  5. We can use 'oui' (yes) and 'non' (no) to answer questions.

Keywords

  • [eu] - as pronounced in 'deux'

  • Statement - a sentence that expresses a fact, idea or opinion

  • Question - a sentence that asks for a reply

Common misconception

All questions in French must have a question word or start with a verb.

Statements can be made into questions in French by changing the tone of your voice.

To illustrate the concept of yes/no questions and the responses 'oui', 'non', and 'merci', it would be useful to get a volunteer to come forward to play the part of responding using these words. This avoids having to mime two different parts.
