Key learning points

  1. The SSC [qu] has the same sound in French as the hard 'c', like the [qu] in 'quand' which means 'when'.
  2. The singular forms of the verb 'partir' (to leave) have the same endings as the verb 'sortir' (to go out); -s,-s,-t,-t.
  3. These endings are silent final consonants, so the singular verb forms all sound the same.
  4. To express our future intentions, we use the 'je' form of the verb 'aller' followed by a verb in its infinitive form.
  5. To express other people's future intentions, we use the 'tu' or 'il, elle' forms of 'aller' followed by an infinitive.

Keywords

  • [qu] - Sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) which sounds like the [qu] in 'question'.

  • Partir - French verb meaning to leave, leaving.

  • Infinitive - Form of a verb giving general meaning, with no subject or tense.

  • Aller - French verb meaning to go, going.

Common misconception

In French [qu] is pronounced the same as in English, in words like 'queen' and 'quiet'.

In French [qu] has the same sound as the hard 'c', this requires a lot of practice!
