Key learning points
- Many French words containing [qu] are cognates. English words ending in -c, -k and -cal often change to -que in French.
- When learning a foreign language it is important to practise vocabulary 'little and often' to strengthen knowledge.
- Sentences can be made negative by adding 'ne ... pas' around the main verb.
- In sentences with two verbs, 'ne ... pas' goes around the first verb (in its short form).
- To express future plans we use 'aller' + infinitive, in this case 'ne...pas' would surround the form of 'aller' used.
Keywords
[qu] - Sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) like the [qu] in 'quoi'.
Negation - Two elements e.g. ne ... pas, around main verb expressing negative meaning.
Ne ... pas - French adverb which fits around the main verb in a sentence to mean 'not'.
Common misconception
We put the 'ne ... pas' together after the main verb to form a negative sentence.
The 'ne ... pas' is in two separate parts and must be placed either side of the main (1st) verb in the sentence.
