Key learning points

  1. The closed [o/ô] sound can be found in French words like 'hôpital' and 'photo'.
  2. Geneva is an important city in Switzerland and is the base for international organisations such as the Red Cross.
  3. You can form an intonation question in French by raising your voice at the end of a statement: 'Il a visité la ville ?'.
  4. Alternatively, you can add 'est-ce que' to the beginning of a statement: 'Est-ce qu'il a visité la ville ?'.

Keywords

  • Closed [o/ô] - sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) like the ‘o’ in photo

  • Intonation - raising or lowering your voice at the end of a statement

  • Est-ce que - French questioning device

Common misconception

I need to translate the word 'did' when I form a question in French.

To form a question in French, you can either raise your voice at the end of a statement to form an intonation question, or you can add 'est-ce que' at the beginning of a sentence. There is no French equivalent for 'did' in a question.
