Key learning points
- The SSC [on] sounds like the 'on' in 'non', meaning 'no' in French.
- To express going 'to' a place in French, we use 'à' for a town/city, 'en' for feminine countries and 'chez' for homes.
- These prepositions can also mean 'in' or 'at' when used with the verbs 'arriver', to arrive, and 'habiter' to live.
- Preposition 'de' means ‘of’ and also replaces the English ‘s for possession, e.g. Lea’s cousin is ‘le cousin de Léa’.
- When completing an extended listening task, taking notes and/or using a support grid can help understanding.
Keywords
[on] - the sound-symbol correspondence which sounds like the 'on' in 'non', which means 'no' in English.
De - preposition meaning 'of, from' in English.
Common misconception
We translate 'de' into English with 'of'.
Sometimes we don't actually need to translate the 'de' in a French sentence into English. For example, there is no possessive apostrophe in French so to express 'Sophie's sister' we have to say 'the sister of Sophie' - 'la sœur de Sophie'.
