Key learning points
- The SSC [y] sounds different to the English [y] and is pronounced as in ‘physique’ and 'style'.
- Verbs like choisir (to choose, choosing) form another type of -IR verb. These include 'réussir' and 'définir'.
- To say 'I' with a verb like choisir, remove the -IR from the infinitive and add -is: je choisis.
- To say 'she, he', remove the -IR and add -it: il, elle choisit.
- These two verb forms sound the same because the -s and -t are silent final consonants (SFCs).
Keywords
[y] - sound-symbol correspondence pronounced as in 'physique'; it sounds the same as the [i] in midi
Choisir - French -ir verb meaning to choose, choosing
Common misconception
The [y] sound is the same in French as it does in English.
The English [y] has two different sounds, as in 'myth', a short 'i' sound, and 'cycling' where it sounds like the word 'eye'. The French [y] sounds like the SSC [i] as in 'midi'.
