Key learning points
- A direct object pronoun replaces a noun that is the object of the verb. It comes before the verb.
- We use 'vous' for the singular formal 'you' direct object pronoun: il vous aide (he helps you).
- The plural direct object pronouns are nous (us), vous (you) and les (them) e.g. elle nous aide (she helps us).
- In a negative sentence, the direct object goes after ne and before the verb: je ne le vends pas (I don't sell it).
Keywords
Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g. 'me', 'you', 'it', 'them'
Negation - two elements e.g. ne … pas around the main verb expressing negative meaning
Common misconception
The subject of a sentence precedes the verb and the object of a sentence always follows the verb.
When using direct object pronouns, the object precedes the verb.
