Key learning points

  1. Use reflexive pronouns (me, te, se...) before the verb when subject and object of the verb are the same person.
  2. Some verbs use reflexive pronouns in French when their English translation doesn't include a reflexive idea.
  3. To replace a noun that is the object, use direct object pronouns le/la/l' before the verb to mean 'him', 'her' or 'it'.
  4. Direct object pronouns are positioned before the verb.
  5. Reflexive pronouns me, te and se are shortened to m', t' and s' before a vowel or silent 'h'

Keywords

  • Reflexive pronoun - used to indicate when the subject and object of a verb are the same, words like 'myself' and 'yourself'

  • Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb e.g. it, him, her

Common misconception

Reflexive verbs and pronouns are only used when a physical action is done to oneself.

Reflexive verbs and pronouns indicate that the subject and object are the same person, but do not always represent a physical action. Sometimes there is no direct translation for the French reflexive pronoun in English.

To practise word order with reflexive pronouns and direct object pronouns, give each student a word in a sentence and ask them to put themselves in the correct order. Card sorts are also useful exercises for word order practice.
