Key learning points
- When the next word begins with a vowel, -s and -t are pronounced, rather than being silent final consonants.
- Add a 't' in an inversion question when the verb ends in a vowel and the pronoun begins in a vowel: A-t-il une voiture?
- To say what doesn't happen, we use ne...pas around the verb. To say what never happens, use ne...jamais.
- Use jouer à to talk about playing sports and jouer de to talk about playing instruments.
- À combines with le/les to form au/aux and de combines with le/les to form du/des.
Keywords
Liaison - pronouncing a usually silent final consonant because a vowel follows
Inversion - when the subject pronoun and the verb switch place to form a question
Ne...pas - negative structure, meaning ‘not’
Ne...jamais - negative structure, meaning ‘never’
Jouer à/de - verb meaning 'to play'
Common misconception
The verb jouer is always followed by the preposition à.
