Key learning points

  1. Many adjectives also function as nouns when preceded by a definite article (le, la, les).
  2. It is common to hear adjectives used as nouns to mean ''the [adjective] one'' e.g Je veux la verte!
  3. Adjectives that come before the noun fit into five categories: BRAGS (Beauty, Rank, Age, Good/Bad and Size/quantity).

Keywords

  • Adjective - word that gives information about a noun

  • Noun - word for a person, place, or thing

  • Definite article - the words le, la, les and l’ meaning the

Common misconception

Adjectives only have one possible translation.

In French, adjectives can be used as a noun. When preceded by a definite article, they are often translated as the (adjective) one e.g. le bleu is translated as the blue one, not blue or the blue.

Tasks A2 and B2 have two versions: Option 1 and Option 2. Option 1 is a more challenging version and Option 2 includes greater support for students who may require it. Option 1 is included in the video.
