Key learning points

  1. Indirect object pronouns replace the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to.
  2. The singular indirect object pronouns are: me, te, lui, and vous.
  3. The 'e' in me/te sounds like the 'e' in 'cheval'; the 'ui' in lui like 'huit' and the [ou] in vous sounds like 'nous'.
  4. Indirect object pronouns precede the conjugated verb. In the perfect tense, they precede both parts of the verb.

Keywords

  • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

Common misconception

French indirect object pronouns are all the same as direct object pronouns.

While some object pronouns are the same when used both indirectly and directly (e.g. me, te), there are some differences that students need to learn. It is a good idea to provide plenty of practice in this area to help students gain confidence.
