Key learning points

  1. Closed [eu] sounds like 'deux' or, when open or spelled [œu], sounds like 'coeur'.
  2. An indirect object pronoun replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to.
  3. The plural indirect object pronouns are: nous, vous, and leur.
  4. Unlike direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns don't change according to the gender of the nouns they replace.

Keywords

  • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

Common misconception

There are separate indirect object pronouns in French to replace masculine and feminine nouns.

French indirect object pronouns make no distinction for gender (unlike direct object pronouns). Lui means both '(to) him' and '(to) her'. Leur means '(to) them' and can refer to both masculine and feminine nouns.
