Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. 'Ne ... que' means 'only'. 'Que' follows the verb and precedes the noun, e.g. 'il ne regarde que des films'.
  2. For 'neither ... nor', 'ne' precedes the verb and each 'ni' precedes one of the negated qualities/nouns.
  3. [-aill-/-ail] sounds like 'taille', [-ill-/-ille] sounds like 'fille'.

Keywords

  • Negation - two elements e.g. 'ne ... pas' around the main verb expressing negative meaning

  • Ne ... que - a structure meaning 'only' which is formed like a negative

Common misconception

The indefinite and partitive articles are used with the structure 'ne ... ni ... ni', e.g. 'Tu n'as ni des pommes ni du fromage'.

When using 'ne ... ni ... ni', the nouns do not require an indefinite or partitive article, e.g. 'Tu n'as ni pommes ni fromage'.
